``[MF Global] means that regulators care more about protecting the so-called "Systemically Important Financial Institutions" than about protecting Ordinary Joe investors. It means that, when crunchtime comes, central banks and government regulators will allow SIFI's to get better, and let the Ordinary Joes get f'd. So far, so evil--but here comes the really troubling part: It is an open secret that there are more paper-assets than there are actual assets. The markets are essentially playing musical chairs--and praying that the music never stops.''

In spite of what you hear by the nanny-zone Eurocrats, the rifts keep getting wider and the odds the Merkozy agreement gets tossed to the dogs rises every day. Today the UK put a nail in the coffin of more money to the IMF and Sweden may do so as well. Please consider Euro zone IMF lending plan in danger as UK declines European finance ministers looked unlikely to reach a target of boosting IMF resources by 200 billion euros to ward off the debt crisis on Monday, after Britain said it would

Already it's clear that one of the hot tech topics of 2012 will be "The Internet of Things" – the idea that even the most mundane objects will be hooked up to the Net and communicating over it. So far, pundits have concentrated on trivial applications like being able to check your fridge's contents from a browser, but potentially it could be much more than that if the "things" are groups of sensors whose data can be usefully aggregated.

Just what might be possible is hinted at

With everyone and the kitchen sink busy sneaking away from the trading floor or holiday dinner to pen predictions for 2012 that will "hopefully" have a success rate of at least 50%+1 (or in Byron Wien's case, even just 1%), others such as Grant Williams have taken the opposite route, and in his latest Things that Make You Go Hmm, he has writen a retrospective, from the point of view of a man sitting on the edge of the end of the world, namely December 20, 2012, and looking back at the key events of the year. Among the primary "memories" of 2012 was the capitulation of Germany and the full

After GoDaddy made its very public announcement that it no longer supports SOPA, after being a very vocal supporter (despite the fact that it almost certainly violated the original version of the law), many have doubted the sincerity of the company, especially since it confined its remarks to SOPA. So after getting some more pressure, the company put out a separate clarifying statement that it doesn't support PIPA (PROTECT IP) either. Still, there are plenty of people who don't buy it. It didn't help that the company's new CEO (though he's been at the company in other roles for a while) gave a really weak answer, when pressed on the company's level of support, suggesting that it may have just stepped back from publicly supporting the bills, but hasn't actually switched its full

Guru-nomics… It’s that time of year when every self-respecting student of markets blows the dust off their crystal ball, and sets about attempting to forecast the direction of markets for the next year. Some pore over charts, others examine the history of presidential election years, some analyse market data and

With gold, silver, stocks and crude oil all posting strong gains, and continued worries about where the global economy is headed, the Godfather of newsletter writers, Richard Russell, had this to say in his latest commentary: “Lowry's is one of the technical studies that I depend on in my appraisals of the stock market. Turning then to Lowry's figures, what we see here is critically important. In early August, the Buying Power Index (demand) broke below the Selling Pressure Index (supply).”
